Year 4 - Primary Care Placement
Primary care is, for most patients, the first place they turn to with a health problem – the general practitioner's surgery next to their home. In Year 4, through lectures, interactive seminars, practical exercises and a one-day placement in a general practice, we will guide you through what this first encounter with the healthcare system actually looks like: from the first contact with a patient, through prevention and care for the chronically ill, to the role of the GP as a guide through the whole care system.
The purpose of the training practice visit is to become familiar with how the surgery runs and to take part in providing routine care delivered by the doctor and the nurse. An optional part of the placement is a home visit to a selected patient.
For detailed course content, see the Year 4 syllabus. The credit is awarded on condition of completing the weekly programme.
Attendance - Primary Care 1
During the one-week teaching block, some parts of the course are mandatory and cannot be missed as part of the permitted absence. These are:
- the full-day placement in a general practice on Thursday,
- the Friday session during which the final assessment test takes place.
Attendance at these sessions is required in order to receive course credit. Any permitted absence may be taken during the remaining parts of the course, provided that the overall attendance remains at least 80%.
